Tuesday Display Chain ~ Patina

It feels like Tuesdays are coming around quicker and quicker. Wish time would slow down a bit so we could enjoy the summer at a slower pace.

Misi, at 1890 Gable House Musings, is hosting today's Display Chain. The theme is Patina. Interesting choice . . . I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's displays. I love things that grow more beautiful with wear.

Like this copper oil lamp that hangs out with a collection of bells. The little bells are just starting to get a layer of patina . . .

I picked up this cast iron angel at a flea market. She's intended to be a candle holder, but I put her to use in a birds nests display . . .

And this bread box from the Country House catalog was all shiny and new ten years ago. I love the look of old tin punch . . .

I wonder what it is about a worn look that makes a piece so appealing. Not only does patina make a piece look good, but it seems to convey a special feeling too. One might suggest it's because of the "history" of the piece, but sometimes we don't even know where it came from. Or maybe it's just because the item represents "experience". Why do you think we're attracted to things that are a bit battered and beaten?

for me, it's because they are a bit more like me, battered and worn with time.
Lovely post, Madalynne.....

Fantastic old finishes...and your displays are super. Love the breadbox! Is that from age or did you treat it somehow? Either way...it's wonderful

For me an old finish represents a lifetime (or more) of use and enjoyment by someone who has gone before me. I often think "if this ____ could talk"...I'd sure love to hear the stories.

Thanks for sharing!

Gorgeous displays and wonderful patina Madalynne! Love the eagle bell and the cast iron angel...and, OH, the nests!! Love me my nests!!! I wish I knew what it was that was so enticing - I would be much better able to resist bringing them home with me. I think for me it's not only the visual appeal, but wondering whose hands used this, whose home did it adorn? Especially with utilitarian pieces and such....the people have gone, but the object remains...so, in a sense, some of those people's spirit remains....(Don't make me think so hard this early in the week!!) Have a great one! Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

At the risk of sounding "loopy", Madalynne, I heard of a Japanese term once and I don't know the correct spelling, but it sounds like "yaggi" and it means "the essence of those who have gone before us". Maybe these wonderful pieces intrigue us because they carry a slight essence or picture of the folks who used them? You have great items and use them so well! ~*~Lisa
